Umma: The Journal of Contemporary Literature and Creative Arts is a Senate-approved bi-annual publication jointly run by the departments of Literature and Creative Arts in the College of Humanities of the University of Dar es Salaam. The journal has a DOI and has an indexing licence with EBSCO. The main objective of the journal is to stimulate and encourage debate on key themes in literature and the creative arts. Two years after the establishment of the Department of Literature in 1964 as part of the University of East Africa, a journal/magazine known as Darlite started in 1966, primarily as a students’ literary magazine. In 1970, its name changed to Umma: A Magazine for Original Writing, which has since been superseded by the present name. The revival of Umma under the twin departments of Literature and Creative Arts is a continuation of Umma Vol. 7, Issues No. 1 and 2, last produced in 1986 and got grounded because of the turmoil of the 1980s. We are now inviting papers for Vol. 11, issues 1 and 2, for 2024 (June and December, respectively). Scholars and researchers are, therefore, invited to submit their unpublished original scholarly writing in English for consideration. All the submissions will be peer-reviewed and evaluated based on their originality and relevance to the journal contributions.
